The numbers
How it works
Give a trip its city and each day gets that city's street map from the site's shared map files. Places with a pin are joined in list order by the shortest walk along the streets: each pin snaps to the nearest street corner, then A* search grows outwards from the start, always trying the corner with the smallest distance walked so far plus the straight-line distance still to go. Walking time assumes 5 km/h.
Times on a day are the trip city's local time. The page reads its time zone from the shared list of places and compares its offset from UTC with yours, for that date, so summer time on either side is handled.
f(n) = g(n) + h(n)g: metres walked to corner n; h: straight line from n to the goal
t = d ÷ 5 km/ha 1.2 km leg is about 14 minutes
Δ = offset(city) − offset(you)both offsets from UTC on that date
A straight line can never be longer than the real walk, so A* finds the shortest route while looking at a fraction of the streets.
